About the O-58 Grasshopper
The Aeronca O-58 Grasshopper is an American fixed-wing observation and liaison aircraft. Adapted from pre-war commercial models, it accommodates a crew of two comprising a pilot and an observer in a single-engine layout. It suits military observation, transport duties, and short-range reconnaissance operations requiring flights from unprepared landing strips.
The type was evaluated before receiving large military orders during World War II, where it was utilized for spotting activities and directing artillery fire. Pilots trained on these aircraft before advancing to front-line liaison machines. Some examples were later transferred to the Free French Forces in North Africa and saw service in Italy. A related training glider version was also constructed for military training duties.
