About the BD-4

The Bede Aircraft BD-4 is an American homebuilt fixed-wing aircraft featuring a high-wing cantilever design. Accommodating four occupants, it relies on a single piston engine and can be equipped with either a tailwheel or tricycle undercarriage, making it suitable for amateur builders with limited fabrication experience.

Created to be among the earliest kitplanes, the design utilized flat aluminum sheeting and bolted aluminum angle braces to simplify construction. An early wing feature integrated the fuel tank directly into the structure, though leaks led to a later redesign featuring a conventional metal wing with separate tanks. The type remains popular with numerous plans sold and completed examples.
