About the A-1A

The Aviat A-1A is a single-engine, high-wing utility aircraft built in the United States by Aviat Aircraft. It accommodates two people in tandem and is well-suited for observation, patrol, and utility missions due to its excellent all-around visibility and high power-to-weight ratio.

Crafted by Christen Industries using computer-aided design, the prototype completed its maiden flight in the mid-1980s and earned certification shortly afterward. It became a commercial success with hundreds of sales. The airframe utilizes a steel tube structure with fabric covering and metal leading edges. Operators have included government agencies and conservation groups, such as the Kenya Wildlife Service, which utilizes the type for aerial tracking of elephant herds.
