The Yak 55M is a single-seat, fixed-wing aerobatic aircraft featuring a mid-mounted symmetrical wing and an enclosed cockpit, designed for precision competition flying. It suits competitive aerobatic pilots seeking high roll rates and tight maneuverability.

Following earlier successes, designers at the Yakovlev bureau created the initial aircraft to match the tight, low-speed style of Western competitors, with the prototype flying in the early nineteen-eighties. To satisfy demands for an increased roll rate, the revised variant described here entered production following a redesign that incorporated a smaller wing.
