About the L-5

The Stinson L-5 Sentinel is an American fixed-wing liaison aircraft built exclusively for military service, featuring a high-wing configuration and a single piston engine. It accommodates a crew of two in a tandem seating arrangement, serving roles such as courier work and short-range observation for military branches during wartime.

Tracing its origins to prewar civilian designs produced in Michigan, the type evolved through several company acquisitions and experimental versions before meeting rigorous military engineering standards. Factory personnel dubbed the experimental prototype the flying jeep, and production models went on to serve multiple branches of the armed forces as standard liaison aircraft.
