About the PT-22

The Ryan PT-22 is a fixed-wing military trainer aircraft featuring a single engine and a two-seat arrangement for a student and instructor. It is a purpose-built monoplane layout designed for primary flight training.

Developed from a civilian series to meet wartime training demands, the aircraft featured a stressed metal skin, wood-and-fabric wings, and distinctive knuckle-type main landing gear. Production versions omitted wheel fairings to ease maintenance. Following widespread use by military and civil training schools, the type was retired from active service and remains sought after by vintage aircraft collectors.
