About the S-4

The Rans S-4 is an American single-engine, fixed-wing monoplane designed by Randy Schlitter. Suited for amateur builders and ultralight aviation enthusiasts, it features a single-seat enclosed cockpit and a tractor configuration. The airframe utilizes a welded steel tube front fuselage combined with a bolted aluminum rear structure, enclosed by pre-sewn Dacron envelopes to reduce assembly time.

Conceived out of dissatisfaction with existing ultralight options, the design first flew in March following development that started with prototype construction in November. Manufacturing shifted to Rans after an initial partnership dissolved. The aircraft is offered with various engine choices and can be fitted with conventional landing gear, tricycle gear, floats, or skis, with hundreds built and flown across multiple countries.
