About the AS - W 20

The A.Schleicher & AS - W 20 is a type-certificated single-seat glider built for the class. It combines a fuselage nearly identical to another company model with newly designed flapped wings, suiting competitive gliding pilots.

Designed by Gerhard Waibel, the prototype first flew in the nineteen-seventies. Production examples incorporated various enhancements over time, including wingtip extensions, pneumatic turbulators, and winglets. The manufacturer built a substantial number of units, with additional aircraft constructed under license by a French company. The type excelled in competition, winning numerous national and world championships and setting a world triangle distance record. It remained in production until being succeeded by a newer sailplane model.
