About the P-48X
The Vultee P-48X is an American single-engine, single-seat fighter aircraft featuring a metal-covered semi-monocoque fuselage, fully retractable landing gear, and a low-wing monoplane layout. Initially ordered for foreign defense, the type was ultimately retained for domestic training and operational duties.
Designed on the eve of the Second World War as part of a family of related aircraft types, the prototype first flew in the autumn of 1939. Following export restrictions and embargoes, the aircraft were redesignated and deployed primarily to training bases and defensive units, with numerous examples later transferred abroad under lend-lease arrangements.
