About the XL-2

The Liberty Aerospace Incorporated XL-2 is a two-seat, low-wing fixed-wing aircraft manufactured in Florida, functioning as both a private touring machine and a flight trainer. It utilizes a tricycle landing gear arrangement with steel sprung legs alongside a composite fuselage and aluminum wings, featuring side-by-side cockpit seating accessed via gull-wing doors and powered by a fuel-injected engine equipped with digital engine control.

Derived from a kitplane and motor-glider design created by Ivan Shaw, the aircraft received type certification under standard airworthiness regulations. Modifications from the original kit design included a widened and heightened fuselage to accommodate pilots, a metal wing structure, and an alternative engine installation. Production changed hands among several companies over subsequent years, with manufacturing rights and type certificates transferring between Florida and South Carolina.
