About the G103 Twin Astir

The Burkhart Grob Flugzeugbau G103 TWIN ASTIR is a German type-certificated glider and glass-reinforced plastic sailplane built to accommodate two occupants. It suits pilots seeking a tandem-seating training or recreational aircraft featuring a mid-wing layout and a pair of pilot stations.

Engineered during the seventies by Grob Aircraft AG as a companion project to their single-seat G 102, the design incorporated forward-swept wings to maintain proper balance. Early models featured an unusual retraction mechanism where the main wheel rotated sideways before pulling up flat beneath the rear seat, though this was later replaced with a fixed layout. Factory options permitted front-seat instrumentation and water ballast. It was eventually succeeded by later iterations including the Twin II and Twin III.
