About the D17S

The Beech D17S is an American single-engine, fixed-wing biplane designed as a fast transport and air racing aircraft. It suits business executives and private owners looking for a luxurious cabin layout, typically accommodating a pilot and up to five passengers within its leather and mohair-trimmed interior.

The aircraft was developed by a company established in Kansas by a former Travel Air executive, along with designer Ted Wells, and made its first flight in late 1932. Known for its distinct negative wing stagger where the lower wing sits forward of the upper, the D17 features a fabric-covered welded steel tube fuselage and retractable conventional landing gear. During World War II, allied forces utilized the type, and civilian production continued until 1949, resulting in hundreds built by hand.
