About the BD5B

The Bede Aircraft BD-5B is a single-seat, fixed-wing homebuilt aircraft configured with a single engine. Designed in the United States by Jim Bede, it features a streamlined fuselage with a semi-reclined pilot position beneath a large canopy and a mid-fuselage engine compartment.

Introduced in kit form during the early nineteen-seventies, the design attracted thousands of orders due to its fighter-like appearance and low cost. However, corporate bankruptcy and difficulties finding a reliable powerplant resulted in few kit completions and prevented the production of factory-built versions. Despite these commercial challenges, surviving examples remain active, and a jet-powered variant holds a notable world size record.
