About the Aop 9

The Auster AOP 9 is a British fixed-wing military air observation aircraft designed for observation posts and suited for rough field operations. It features a braced high-wing monoplane layout with a fixed tailwheel undercarriage, a metal-skinned wing and tail, and a cabin accommodating three individuals with a side-by-side pilot and passenger seating arrangement alongside a convertible rear floor.

Created as a successor to an earlier observation model, the design incorporated a more powerful inverted inline engine, larger wings, and oversized flaps to drastically improve takeoff and landing performance on muddy or ploughed terrain. The prototype made its initial flight in March 1954, leading to military service across various overseas operations and conflicts. Following military retirement, examples transitioned into civilian registers, and select airframes continue to be maintained in flying condition by historical flights.
