About the J1
The Auster Aircraft J1 is a British single-engine, high-wing touring monoplane built to seat three people, including the pilot. Developed as a civil tourer derived from military observation aircraft, it suits private flyers, flying clubs, and small commercial operators for regional transport and utility work.
Created by Auster Aircraft Limited at its Leicestershire facility, production of the type began immediately after the Second World War. It evolved into one of the nation's most successful post-war light aircraft, with hundreds constructed and extensively exported worldwide. Over the years, numerous examples underwent conversions involving upgraded engines and modified fins, while others served in niche roles such as banner towing and aerial photography, with survivors continuing to fly with private owners decades later.
