About the 520
The Aero Commander 520 is an American twin-engine, fixed-wing aircraft built for both civilian and military operators. Featuring a high-wing configuration, a retractable tricycle landing gear, and a spacious cabin, it is well-suited for remote operations and short, unprepared airstrips.
The aircraft traces its lineage back to aeronautical engineer Ted Smith, who founded the manufacturing company with the vision of creating a rugged light twin. Production of this model began after the designer became general manager, with deliveries starting in the early 1950s. The type is powered by two engines turning two-blade propellers and features fuel stored in baglike wing cells. Examples were built until the mid-1950s before making way for subsequent variants.
