About the AL-60

The Aermacchi AL-60 is a fixed-wing light civil utility aircraft designed in the United States by Al Mooney of Lockheed. Suited for operations in underdeveloped regions, it features a single-engine layout with a conventional tricycle undercarriage, wing fuel tanks, and seating for one crew member alongside passengers.

Because Lockheed could not build the design economically domestically, production was established internationally through joint ventures and licenses in Mexico, Argentina, Italy, and South Africa. The prototype first flew in 1959. Variants included modified versions with taildragger undercarriages, such as the South African Atlas C4M Kudu used by the South African Air Force, and later turbine-re-engined conversions.
