FAA Proposes New Airworthiness Directive for Leonardo AW169 Helicopters

The Federal Aviation Administration is proposing to supersede an existing airworthiness directive for Leonardo S.p.a. Model AW169 helicopters due to an incorrect material reference.

The Federal Aviation Administration has put forward a proposal to replace Airworthiness Directive 2024-05-06, which currently impacts all Leonardo S.p.a. Model AW169 rotorcraft. The previous directive mandated updates to the airworthiness limitations section of existing maintenance manuals, instructions for continued airworthiness, and approved maintenance or inspection programs.

According to the announcement, the agency determined after issuing the earlier directive that the documentation referenced incorrect material for revising the airworthiness limitations section. To correct this oversight, the newly proposed directive would require affected operators to revise the airworthiness limitations section within their maintenance manuals, instructions for continued airworthiness, and approved inspection programs.

The regulatory action is intended to address the identified unsafe condition present in these products. Operators of the twin-engine rotorcraft should review the proposed rule as it moves through the federal rulemaking process.

The Leonardo AW169 is a certified utility helicopter with seating for up to 9 occupants. Powered by engines delivering 735.0 kW, the aircraft achieves a cruise speed of 287.0 km/h and a range of 820.0 km. Its maximum take-off weight is 4800.0 kg, and the type performed its first flight on May 10, 2012.
