The Aircraft Ownersing and Pilots Association Foundation announced the distribution of over $2.2 million in flight training and aviation scholarships for 2026. According to foundation officials, this financial distribution represents the highest annual total in the organization's history, featuring an average award of $6,500.

A significant portion of these funds, exceeding $1.3 million, received backing from the Ray Foundation. This money was allocated to 115 high school educators and students, with each recipient getting $12,000 to apply toward earning a private pilot certificate.

Beyond high school flight training, financial support covers a wide variety of aviation disciplines. Awards help recipients pursue sport, commercial, private, and flight instructor certificates, along with instrument or multiengine ratings. Non-flying educational paths, such as flight dispatcher and aircraft mechanic training, are also supported.

Elizabeth Tennyson, AOPA Foundation Senior Vice President, stated that individual donors passionate about aviation fund these programs through their investments in others, noting that member dues do not support these charitable grants. To qualify for financial assistance, candidates must maintain an active AOPA membership, which remains complimentary for high school students, alongside meeting specific criteria.

Taz Thomas, AOPA Foundation Scholarship Program Senior Manager, explained that conducting two annual application windows—one from April to June and another from October to December—reduces wait times for candidates seeking a new rating or certificate. Thomas added that unsuccessful applicants gain an earlier chance to reapply.

The application period opened on October 1 and is scheduled to close on December 31.
