About the KR-1
The Rand KR-1 is a single-seat, low-wing cantilever monoplane designed in the United States specifically for amateur home construction and first-time builders. Marketed by Rand Robinson Engineering, this fixed-wing aircraft suits aviation enthusiasts seeking a lightweight, economical machine powered by a single Volkswagen air-cooled piston engine.
Inspired by the Taylor Monoplane, the designer created a shorter wing with a wider chord to reduce overall weight. The structure relies on a wooden box framework combined with polystyrene foam to form its aerodynamic shape, enclosed in fabric-infused resin and modeled after the airfoil of the British Spitfire. A two-seat variant designated the KR-2 was also produced, and an active community of builders continues to share resources and organize gatherings.
