About the Auster AOP6

The Auster Aircraft Auster AOP6 is a British single-engine military air observation aircraft featuring a traditional fixed-wing layout and dual pilot accommodations. It was developed to succeed wartime observation types in military service, utilizing a strengthened structure, heavier all-up weight, and a specialized inverted in-line piston engine.

Distinguished visually from earlier models by lengthened landing gear struts and external non-retractable aerofoil flaps, large numbers were delivered to military forces domestically and abroad. Certain airframes were adapted for dual-control training tasks or modified for polar expedition work with specialised radio installations, skis, and high-visibility finishes. As newer observation types entered service, surplus examples were phased out and transitioned into civilian use.
