About the Chief

The Aeronca Chief is an American single-engine, high-wing light aircraft featuring fixed conventional landing gear and a side-by-side seating arrangement for two people. Built for flight training and personal transportation, it offers gentle handling characteristics and basic flying manners.

Developed in tandem with a sibling tandem-seat trainer to maximize shared parts usage, the aircraft utilized modern moving assembly line techniques to control manufacturing costs. Production took place primarily in Ohio before operations ceased around mid-century. The design rights later passed to new holders, and the type was subsequently manufactured overseas under a foreign designation with minor structural modifications.
