About the Belfair
The Tipsy Belfair is a Belgian fixed-wing light aircraft designed for two occupants and powered by a single piston engine. Built following World War II, this low-wing cantilever monoplane features a conventional layout with a tailwheel undercarriage and an enclosed cabin, making it suited for private aviation enthusiasts.
Developed by Ernest Oscar Tips from a pre-war design, the aircraft achieved notable success by breaking international distance marks for its weight class. Despite its strong performance, commercial sales suffered due to post-war market saturation competing against inexpensive surplus types. Production was ultimately limited, with some airframes completed in the United Kingdom where examples have continued flying and undergoing restoration decades later.
