About the EA-400

The Extra-Flugzeugbau EA-400 is a German fixed-wing, type-certificated aircraft built for travel, featuring a high-wing monoplane layout with a pressurized cabin and carbon fiber construction. It accommodates two crew members and provides a club seating arrangement with a folding table for passengers. Driven by a single liquid-cooled turbocharged piston engine, it suits pilots looking for cross-country capability.

Walter Extra started the design alongside engineering assistance from the Technical University of Delft, drawing on expertise in aerodynamics and airfoil design. The landing gear features unique geometry and retracts behind doors, while the wing incorporates recessed Fowler flaps to reduce stall speed. All units received modifications for flight into known icing conditions, utilizing Teflon boots, heated components, and robust alternators. Despite offering comfortable amenities and upgrades such as modern GPS navigators and improved propeller blades, the aircraft required extensive labor hours to manufacture and saw limited production before financial difficulties halted the project.
