About the AS-355 Ecureuil 2
The Aerospatiale AS-355 Ecureuil 2 is a French twin-engine rotorcraft configured for light utility roles. Developed as a twin-engined evolution of the single-engine Écureuil, it features a single main rotor and accommodates a pilot alongside multiple passengers.
Created under the direction of Chief Engineer René Mouille to succeed older utility helicopters, the design incorporated innovative manufacturing techniques such as rolled sheet structures and the Starflex main rotor. It was produced by Aérospatiale and later under corporate successors including Eurocopter and Airbus Helicopters, with international manufacturing and assembly taking place in locations such as Brazil. Over the years, the type has seen numerous variant developments and third-party modifications tailored to corporate transport and utility operators.
This page covers the Aerospatiale AS-355 Twin Squirrel: the same aircraft under other designations.
